Couples Counselling

Work together to improve your relationship.

Work together to improve your relationship.

Our couples counselling courses will have you and your partner(s) attend sessions both separately and together so you can best communicate how you feel.

Why choose couples counselling?

It’s normal to have disagreements, get into arguments, and go through rough patches. But prolonged periods of broken communication in intimate partner relationships can leave both individuals feeling weary.

When this happens, talking it through with a qualified professional can help you feel happy again.

It doesn’t matter how long you and your partner have been together. You may benefit from couples counselling no matter the stage of your relationship.

You also needn’t wait until things feel like they’re at breaking point — we support many couples who are happy together but want help working through certain challenges.

We were sceptical about couples counselling at first. It sounds like a cliché, but our sessions actually transformed our relationship! Our counsellor helped us both think differently, and we understand each other so much better now.

What issues can we help with?

We provide a safe, non-judgemental space. We give you and your partner equal time to talk about whatever is bothering you. We help you understand your partner’s viewpoints and vice versa.

Couples counselling may particularly help if:

  • You have the same arguments again and again
  • Somebody has cheated in the relationship
  • You’ve lost trust or struggle to express your feelings to each other
  • One or both of you is coping with the loss of a loved one
  • You’re going through changes together, like moving house, changing jobs or financial difficulties
  • Your family dynamic is changing via pregnancy, miscarriage, IVF or adoption
  • One or both of you have a chronic illness or other health problems
  • You’re experiencing issues with your sex life

If you feel your problems are solely related to your sex life, you might want to take a look at our sex therapy services.

The couples counselling we offer is fully-funded, so we often have eligibility criteria’s to follow.

This can vary, but our administration team can always help with what support is available, and to whom.

You’ll first attend an initial consultation. Your counsellor will get to know more about you and answer any important questions.

If you, your partner, and your counsellor feel you can work together, you’ll be offered weekly sessions at the same time with the same counsellor.

You’ll work together to gradually resolve your problems and better understand each other.

It’s important to note that counselling takes time, so it may take a few sessions to begin to feel changes.

If violence or abuse is an issue in your relationship, couples counselling may not be a safe solution.

But we will direct you and your partner to other services that we, or our partner organisations, provide.

You may want to look at our Domestic Abuse Services or Behaviour Change Programmes.

It’s important that you tell your counsellor if you feel you’d be able to work better with someone else.

A counsellor will never take this personally, and we want you to get the most out of your sessions.

We have practitioners specifically experienced in supporting people who are neurodiverse or have disabilities. We have counsellors that specialise in issues that impact the LGBTQIA+ community and people of colour.

Counselling works better when you build a good relationship with your practitioner. It’s better to mention it early on if you’d like to try a different counsellor, or let us know when booking if you would like to work with a practitioner with specific skills — we will try our best to accommodate you.

We offer sessions of funded counselling to individuals and couples, including more specialist – sex therapy.

The number of free sessions you receive will depend on your circumstances, and on the funding available which covers any costs.

Many people do not feel the need to continue after 10 sessions.
