Femicide Census highlights need for behaviour change services

More mothers were killed by their sons in 2022 than by strangers.

Behaviour change programmes must become widely available, and CAPVA must be better recognised by services.

The latest report from the Femicide Census states that more mothers were killed by their sons in 2022 than by strangers.

It’s an alarming fact that highlights the prevalence of domestic homicides perpetrated by adult sons. Such instances accounted for 10% of the total number of women killed by men in 2022.

The Femicide Census report does not account for son-to-mother violence that doesn’t result in death. There are many such instances reported to police each year, and many more that go unreported.

Although not all instances of son-to-mother violence begin in childhood, abusive behaviours can escalate later in life if they begin in childhood and are left unchecked.

Child and adolescent to parent violence and abuse (CAPVA) must be taken seriously by statutory services. When a family reports abuse at the hands of a young person, action must be taken to halt the violence immediately.

Additionally, behaviour change programmes for perpetrators of all risk levels must become available around the country. Intervening early is key to reducing fatal instances of domestic violence.
